Cupholders

The one gripe I have about my 530i is that the "can holders" are worse than useless. They lull you into a false sense of security and then allow whatever they're holding to launch at the most unexpected moments. Has anyone found a non-chintzy looking alternative? [???1]

I should point out that I have a 130 mile r/t commute every day. I usually drink two large travel mugs on the way to work each morning. But since I bought the 530i, I'm limited to one because I usually have to hold it or at least steady it in the "can holder" much of the time.

You may find something that you like here. But they don't list the 6 series specifically.

Cup holders are an American thing, they just stuck these chintzy cupholders on to satisfy us Americans. Isn't it a way of thinking in Germany, that driving should be your sole focus? Not drinking, reading, watching TV... fussing with iDrive. [?|]

Seems pretty expensive for cupholders.
Think how many cans of beer you could buy for that kinda $

Whoa. Nice looking, but a bit pricey, vlad. Thanks for the link, though. I found these which look to be usable and a little cheaper. I like the design of these, too. They don't stick out and they take up less valuable room. [thumb]

I got my Ultimate Cupholders in the mail today. Well worth the money. They're very nicely crafted, they fit great, and they look very cool once in place. Now I can go back to my usual two travel mugs of coffee during the morning commute. [thumb]

And before anyone starts tsk-tsking me for drinking coffee whilst driving, my commute is 65 miles of chalk-line straight highway in the early morning. If I thought I could get away with a quick nap, I'd do it. [;)]

Anyway, I spent $100 for the tec-accessories cupholder for the E39 and as expensive as that is, I actually think it was worth it. But as far as I know, it only fits in the storage bin for the E39 console

yea i heard they had no ac in the first cars they brought over here either..

my cup holders are good for holding an airfreshner and my cellie when driving. those small things won't even hold my 1 liter btl of water...

and sooner, why flash your license plate number?

It's a vanity plate that is actually mounted on my garage wall now. (One Two Be A M5 or Want to be a M5 for those of you that are slow) I'm not too worried about someone tracking me down with it. The car is garaged day and night, I work at home. A lot of people have pics on the internet with their license plate showing. My car came with four cupholders. Two located behind the shift knob that don't hold any cups very well, and if they do, I just can't shift at all with any cups there. The other two, I have to open up the center console and there is a dual can-holder piece taking up the whole center console storage. Naturally, I took that piece out and store personal "emergency" items there (bottle of water, small flashlight, etc.). You can always tell that a car is a driver's car when it has crappy (or no) cupholders. [hihi]

American cars have the best cupholders, I've seen several that hold large McDonald's cups!!! If you have a lid on, you can do whatever stunts you want and they won't budge! So what does that say about American cars???

As far as cup holders in general go I don't think theres anything wrong with having one for the driver. Not like I'm going to be drinking a lot but if you have a bottle of water it would be nice to have some place to put it... My car has NO cup holders and NO storage anywhere so I am going to go with one of the nice ones from drinkholders.com. Thanks for the link vlad! Very nice looking devices and I think I'll order one of those stainless steel mugs too [:)]
